The NATIONAL BANK OF ROMANIA was the government bank and basically the ONLY bank under communism. Today, it is a commercial bank that competes with dozens of local, national and international banks. It still serves as sort of the "Federal Reserve" and sets exchange rates and monitors the country's money.
