RAUL DAMBOVITA

The Dambovita River flows through Bucharest... it was "built" under communism so that "a river runs through it," so to speak. This scene is just two blocks from our apartment.

The empty building on the top right corner was to be the "Romanian National Library," but it never got completed. When communism ended, workers walked off the job, left the cranes standing and never looked back. Many of these places have rusty cranes peering over them. Aging concrete and rusted rebar are common sights!

Interestingly, just above this shot and to the left, the river goes underground for a large "piata" (open plaza) to exist above it. It resumes a few blocks away. Just northwest of the city lies a large lake that was built to hold water to keep the river well-supplied.

Hi,

I just discovered yout blog and I want to make some remarks:

Dambovita river was not built by communists it just end up like that because of them.

Dambovita was the heart of Bucharest, around it the city was developed.

In the 80's Ceausescu wanted "Seine" of Bucharest an so he enlarged the "canal" to slowdown the flow and to become wider. And that's why in the west side of Bucharest we have a huge lake (btw, it was built over a cemetery)
