I often have "this would never happen in America" moments. Sometimes they are funny, sometimes pathetic, sometimes simply interesting. Today, I had one of those moments ....very interesting!
I was walking down a residential street, taking a short-cut from a bus stop, and saw all these media trucks with big satellites in front of a gated house. Now, almost ALL houses here are gated, so that is no big deal. They were people all in the street poised with cameras, so I waited to see what was up.
Then, the gate opened and a little blue car pulls out and Trian Basescu (the PRESIDENT of Romania) is in it, alone and driving, waving to everyone with the window down. He simply pulled off and they all followed him. It would never happen in America! I was right there, could have touched the car. Then on the evening news, we see that he and his wife went shopping at Selgros (sort of like Sam's Club or Costco) like "normal people."
Today, by the way, is the referendum where Romanians decide if they want him to remain president. Political hoopla!
